3 Double rooms were booked for a party of 6 adults. 1 room was huge & very nice. The second room was an average size and adequate. The third room was so small that it should not have been classed as a double. The wardrobe space was a very small cupboard so high up in the wall that a pulley had to be used to pull down the rail to enable clothes to be hung. This rail was only about two feet long, if that. There was no other cupboard or drawer in the room. There was about a 10 inch gap either side of the bed and the door into the room opened directly onto the bottom of the bed. We asked for this to be changed for something a little bigger but were told this was a normal size room and the other 2 rooms were larger than the norm and anyway there was nothing else available. I'm afraid I find this hard to believe, particularly as we were able to see in some of the other rooms, they were very much bigger. This room was very claustrophobic and very difficult for 2 people to be in the room at the same time. This is the reason I would find it difficult to recommend this hotel. I also feel it is very important anyone considering booking at the San Moise should be made aware that they could possibly be allocated such a room. Also, the breakfast serving area was very very small and the breakfasts were really not good. The cooked food had been cooked a lot earlier and just kept warm-ish. The fruit was tinned not fresh and the bread for toast was white sliced! Dreadful!! Continental breakfasts are usually delicious, with fresh fruit, warm croissants and a variety of lovely breads, not at the San Moise.

Although we had facilities for making drinks in our room, they do not provide coffee, only teabags. The reason apparently is that the Italians do not drink instant coffee. If you like to have a coffee in your room it is advisable to take some with you. This is not a criticism, just a word of advice.

On arrival we were advised that the San Moise had a problem with hot water, and were immediately transferred to another hotel nearby (the Ateneo) which was part of the same group. We had booked 2 rooms: a double and a triple. The triple was excellent, but the double was small, dark and airless - this was not what we had paid for but in the circumstances we had no choice bt to accept it as we could not begin a asearch for a hotel with 2 rooms at that point. However, the staff were helpful and friendly, the rooms were clean, and the breakfast good.

Take the free trip to Murano which the hotel offers to arrange, even if it's only to enjoy the free vaporetto ride! The glassworks trip is of course really a sales pitch, but the glass on display is stunning, and Murano itself is very agreeable and different from the main island. Of course, you expect Venice to be expensive, but do beware of coffee at Florian's - EUR 14 per head for 1 cup (including surchrage if orchestra is playing). With 5 people in my party I thought 50 pounds somewhat excessive for a cup of coffee each, so we didn't bother and moved on!

A reservation - it's not easy to find, the building we were sent a map of is not the location we were brought to when we checked in. We were at least 10 minutes walk from the original San Moise - in a "sub-office".

Nearby restaurants are poor value. Good meals elsewhere are expensive.
